The book Sirat E Mustaqim was written by Shah Ismail Dehlvi (1779-1831), who was the grandson of Shah Waliullah Dehlawi (1703-1762), a famous Islamic scholar and reformer who revived the teachings of Islam in India. Shah Ismail Dehlvi joined the Tariqah-i-Muhammadiyah movement led by Syed Ahmad Barelvi (1786-1831), who aimed to purify Islam from Hindu customs, traditions, and cultural practices. The movement also sought to establish an Islamic state in the North-West Frontier region (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan), where they believed the Muslims could practice Islam in its original form. However, they faced resistance from the British colonialists, the Sikh rulers, and some of the Pashtun tribes who had their own tribal and national loyalties. Shah Ismail Dehlvi and Syed Ahmad Barelvi were martyred in the Battle of Balakot in 1831 against the Sikh army.

The book Sirat E Mustaqim is considered one of the most influential works of Islamic literature in South Asia. It has been translated into several languages, including English, Arabic, Persian, Bengali, and Hindi. It has also been criticized by some scholars and sects for its harsh condemnation of other interpretations and practices of Islam. However, it remains a popular and respected source of guidance for many Muslims who seek to follow the true Islam according to the Quran and the Sunnah.
